Bleach: Life of Shuhei Hisagi

 Bleach has some characters that are very respectful and dutiful, like Byakuya Kuchiki and Ichigo Kurosaki. But very few of them can emulate the example set by Shuhei Hisagi. His character might not have been the center of attention or significant, but that does not mean he lived an uninspiring life. He was an excellent example for other Soul Reapers to follow. But it seems no one was able to stand up to the standards set by him.  

Shuhei’s journey on the show starts 110 years before the main events. He used to be just another young boy back in those days, but everything was about to change. When he was living in Rukongaki, they were confronted with an enormous Hollow. They were helpless but lucky enough that Captain Kensei Muguruma came to their side and rescued them. The events had a long-lasting effect on Shuhei, whose future was paved by the events that day. He wanted to emulate and follow his new hero, who had saved him. So, as soon as he was old enough, he enrolled at the Soul Reaper Academy to make his dreams come true. 

Kensei used to be very skillful and was able to do a lot of missions even in his training days. Once, he was on a mission with Izuru Kira, Momo, and Renji when Hollows surrounded them. Shuhei has valiantly stood his ground as many of his fellows were slain, but he remained unmoved as he ordered others to flee. If his friends hadn’t come on time, he might have ended up dying that day because he had too many serious injuries.

The encounter with the Hollows depressed him as he started considering himself unworthy of his goals. He wanted to follow and become like his Captain Muguruma, but he had failed his academy twice. He was terrified and almost died when he should have protected others in the fight against the Hollows. He discussed with Captain Kaname Tosen that he wanted to be relieved of his rank. Tosen understood his fears and told him that if someone didn’t fear his powers, he was unworthy of them. Because great powers can easily cause significant damage, even to its wielder just as easily, it can hurt others. So Shuhei’s fears were justified, and there was nothing to be ashamed of; Shuhei understood what Tosen was saying and never let go of the lessons he learned that day.

He now had a new role model in Kaname Tosen, who taught him an unforgettable lesson and helped him deal with his negative thoughts. He changed radically after that and became extremely focused, disciplined, and career-oriented. When Sosuke Aizen and his army attacked Karakura Town, Shuhei felt all his fears, but he stood valiantly and used them to make himself better. Ultimately, Tosen’s advice helped him as he stood his ground and faced everything that came his way without even flinching.

Shuhei had to face his role model Tosen who had ironically forgotten his own teachings of respecting power. Shuhei was able to strike him down but had to be saved later by Captain Yamamoto when he faced the Sternritter Driscoll Berci. Once everything was over, he got back to his training as soon as possible as he wanted to sharpen his skills. Shuhei was undoubtedly disappointed as he was controlled by Sternritter to attack Byakuya Kuchiki, and even though he was saved, he must have been disappointed in himself.

What is interesting is the fact that the manga had suggested in its final chapters that he was able to master Bankai. This meant that he was very close to becoming an exceptional Soul Reaper, which was always his goal. His life might have been challenging and full of disappointments, but Shuhei was strong enough to face his shortcomings and grow as the strongest, most dutiful, and respectful character on the show.
