Hubie Halloween Review: Light and Nostalgic Comedy

 Only Adam Sandler is an appreciable part of this October flick.

Although the title is “Hubie Halloween” but there is nothing Halloween-like in this film. Frankly, the horror elements are comical, and the comedy is horrifying. Perhaps, that’s too harsh of a comment; you will have giggles with few jokes here and there.

The one thing that is appreciable is that the new Netflix film is consistent with Adam Sandler’s recent recurring maxim that kindness triumphs over cruelty.


The best joke told in the film is the zinger “Kayaking Gets Me Wet” written across the chest of a 90-year-old actress June Squibb. If you giggled at the joke, then be my guest, you can proceed towards “Hubie Halloween”, but I am obliged to give a strict caveat that most of the jokes in the film should not be even called a joke even if we are considering the standards set by the comedian/actor himself.

However, the film is light-hearted and does not pretend to be anything other than that. So, I don’t reckon it deserves so much criticism. To be fair with it, it’s lively and jaunty in some scenes and Adam Sandler’s acting does make up for the badly written plot.

The hardcore fans of Sandler and June Squibb who are actually multi-generational may find plenty to like about, but then again you shouldn’t ask the hardcore fans about the review of a particular film. The life lessons that the film gives does feel like a Sunday afternoon gospel from a 70-year-old preacher. Lessons like “be kind”, “don’t make fun of anyone weaker than you,” “don’t ever bully someone,” are pretty strong and undebatable, but if you fill the film with Sandler’s tantrums, and derogatory jokes, I don’t reckon people will take your advice so seriously.

Adam Sandler though clearly has slacked while writing the story but has impressed massively with his acting. It was not earlier than last year that he impressed the world with his method acting in Netflix crime thriller “Uncut Gems” which saw him winning an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. The way he transformed his acting process from a serious, methodical routine to his usual connate comic self is worthy of praise (a pattern which is similar to Sacha Baron Cohen’s works in the recent past). If you can compare his roles in “Uncut Gems” and in “Hubie Halloween” you might feel that you are seeing two actors in different roles and that speaks volumes for his acting caliber.
